International Giving

Anyone wishing to make a tax-efficient donation from the United States can do so through the British Schools and Universities Foundation (BSUF)

To make a gift and take a U.S. income tax deduction, you may make a donation to the British Schools & Universities Foundation (Federal Tax ID 13-616-1189), a charitable organisation approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service under code Section 501(c)(3). Write your cheque to the order of the British Schools & Universities Foundation. You should express a preference for {{the institution}} in your transmittal letter, not on your cheque. Such preferences are respected by the Foundation but all grants are made at its sole discretion, as required by the IRS. You can read their annual accounts here.

Legacy Giving

Centuries ago, our founders Mary Erskine and Daniel Stewart laid down legacies that helped create the schools we know today.  Their gifts have endured.  Their generosity is remembered.  If we could somehow show them what their selfless acts have given to thousands of young people over the years...well, we think they would be somewhat emotional.

Today, legacies from individual members of our community continue to secure the future of the schools and the children they serve.  A decision to leave a gift in your will is a gesture that is both profoundly practical and deeply noble.  Your gift will help us continue our life-changing work.  Your generosity will be felt, personally, by a young person who could not otherwise enjoy such an education.  You will be remembered in the best possible way.

There are three main kinds of legacy gifts you might like to consider:

  • Residuary Legacy - A share of your estate to be paid after any debts, funeral costs and cash gifts are paid
  • Pecuniary Legacy - A cash sum which can be index-linked to guarantee its future value
  • Specific Legacy – a particular item to be used or sold by the charity

Another type of legacy, often used to ensure surviving family are looked after, is the Reversionary Legacy, which allows you to leave assets to a named individual for their lifetime whilst deciding who should benefit after they have passed away.

Should you choose to leave a legacy, your solicitor should run through all the options with you when writing your will.
