On Saturday 30 March, Bryan Lewis and Ros Toynbee (Class of 1989) hosted an informal brunch for MES leavers based in and near London at Drake and Morgan in St Pancras Square. This was a success with over 20 attending and a further 20 who would have like to attend but were not able for a variety of reasons. It was a great opportunity for girls to get to know a wider range of 'Merchant Maidens' living and working in the city, and in some cases an opportunity to catch up with old friends too.
The ages of those attending ranged from early 20s to mid 80s. Heloise Kareem (Class of 1952) recalled the 250th Anniversary of Mary Erskine and the celebrations. Heloise mentioned being part of the choir involved in singing the school song at St Giles at the age of 10 in 1944.
Aisha Yusaf (Class of 1999) brought her young son along with her to meet the ladies. Aisha works as a product designer and has recently launched her own business Pika Vision Ltd.
Two ladies brought along items from their own days in school. One lady from the class of 1964 brought along a VI form photograph signed by all her friends and Margaret Holmes (Class of 1961) brought a Merchant Maiden magazine from her last term in school.
The ladies had a great time and were asking when the next meet up was being planned. We promised to organise something very soon and to add everyone to our London WhatsApp group so they can arrange to meet with each other outwith our gatherings.
